Working with individuals with diverse needs requires a range of skills and attributes to be effective and successful:

Empathy: An outstanding support services professional should be able to understand and empathize with anyone who may be struggling with various challenges, including life, academic, social, or emotional difficulties.
Active Listening: Excellent communication skills are necessary to connect with people and create a comfortable and safe environment where they can express their concerns. An outstanding support services professional should be an active listener who can hear what friends are saying and understand their unique situations.
Patience: Helping others through difficult times requires patience. An outstanding support services professional should be able to remain calm and composed even in challenging situations. They don’t give up on a person who may be struggling.
Problem-solving: When individuals face various challenges, an outstanding support services professional should have the ability to help them identify and overcome these challenges – think it through together. The ability to problem-solve effectively, think creatively, and develop solutions is essential.
Flexibility: An outstanding services professional should be adaptable and flexible to meet the unique needs of each person. They should be able to individualize their approach and interventions to fit the needs of each person and situation.
Collaboration: Providing high-quality support services often requires collaboration with teachers, administrators, parents/caregivers, and various related service providers on a person’s team. An outstanding support services professional should be able to work effectively with others and collaborate to support an individual’s success. There should be no problem that is so huge that we together can’t work toward the solution.
Knowledge and Expertise: An outstanding support services professional should have the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide effective support to those they strive to help. This may include knowledge of mental health, behavior management, learning disabilities, and other areas relevant to student support services. There needs to be a passion and commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.

Outstanding support begins from so many different places but always leads back to the same destination time and time again, caring enough to work through the challenge of treating the most vulnerable of us with dignity, respect, and love.
